International Firefighters Day

History

International Firefighters Day celebrates the efforts and contributions of those individuals who dedicate their lives to saving others from fires. Firefighters protect people and animals from disasters such as fires as well as other dangerous situations. Those firefighters who have lost their lives are honored on this day. A sound off usually occurs. This means firefighters sound off their sirens for 30 seconds followed by a minute of silence.

International Firefighters Day was established in 1999 by JJ Edmondson as a tribute to all the firefighters who dedicate their lives to the profession. It especially recognizes the events in Linton, Australia in 1998 and the firefighters who lost their lives combatting a wildfire. This day is observed annually on 4 May.
