International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination seeks to abolish racism and xenophobia. This day serves as a remembrance for the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa in 1960. On this day Police opened fire at protestors during a peaceful demonstration against apartheid pass laws. The result was 69 dead and hundreds injured.
