What Is Sexual Violence?
"Sexual Violence is about power...not sex."
It is an act of violence, with or without force, that is used to control, humiliate and harm another person. It is a very important issue many of us don't talk enough about; yet, it is a significant problem here in Hawaii and world-wide.
Sexual Violence (SV) can happen to anyone. The term Sexual Violence is the umbrella that defines many things concerning sexual abuse, harassment, or any other unwanted sexual advances toward someone. In general, Sexual Violence refers to any sexual activity where consent is not obtained or freely given. Anyone, from any background or ethnicity, as well as people who are married, in a committed relationship, or simply dating can experience Sexual Violence.
Sexual Violence can happen at any location, including work, school, a public place or anywhere else including at a family or friend's house. Surprisingly enough, the person responsible for the violence is often someone the victim knows.
Overall, Sexual Violence is a serious problem that can have lasting, harmful effects on victims and their family, friends, and communities.
If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual violence , please inform your parents, teachers, guidance office or school nurse.
